Five years of neglect on a plexiglass canopy, and what one cleaning can and cannot do

A first cleaning on a stage canopy that had not been touched in five to six years. Visibly better in one pass. Honestly, not done.

Client: Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park

Surface
Plexiglass (acrylic) stage canopy
Condition on arrival
Five to six years uncleaned; large pooling stains etched into the surface
Method
Low-pressure, non-abrasive rinse from the drone; no one on the canopy; venue stayed open
Result
Visibly cleaner after one treatment; about 90% of new is the realistic ceiling on a quarterly program
Next
Semiannual and quarterly program pricing requested for the venue's 2027 budget

The situation

The roof over the stage at Moody Amphitheater is plexiglass glazing. It had not been cleaned in five to six years. Dirt settled where water pools, dried, and settled again, until the pooling spots were etched into the surface rather than sitting on it.

Acrylic glazing punishes the wrong approach. Pressure scratches it, harsh chemistry clouds it, and a crew walking it is a risk to the panel and the person. The venue also could not shut down for a cleaning project.

What we did

We flew the canopy from above with a low-pressure, non-abrasive rinse suited to acrylic, working the pooling areas with dwell time rather than force. No one stood on the canopy, and the venue stayed open.

Before the first pass we photographed the existing condition and the surrounding landscape, the same pre-job documentation we do on every property.

The result, honestly

When the flight was done, the venue's staff said the canopy looked much better. It did.

Our honest read is that it still needs work. Five years of etched-in pooling does not come off in one treatment. We told the venue that a quarterly program can bring the canopy to roughly 90 percent of new over a series of cleanings, and that 100 percent is probably not achievable on this surface. They asked for semiannual and quarterly pricing to present in their 2027 budget.

The lesson

Maintenance is cheaper than a correction.

This is the case for putting exterior cleaning on a calendar. A canopy cleaned every quarter never builds pooling stains, never etches, and never needs a multi-visit recovery program. A canopy left for five years needs exactly that, and even then it will not fully come back.

It is never too late to start, and starting is the right call. But an asset that lags will demand a correction, and the correction always costs more than the upkeep would have. Exterior asset management is mostly the discipline of taking care of what you already own.

Put your building on a calendar before it needs a correction.
